And yet, most first time moms don't have a very clear idea about the things that are really necessary ... Mothers, sisters and friends will offer their own advice, but here are our recommendations for the newborn "starter kit".

What to include in the baby shower list:

- A modular system comprising a bassinet, car seat and stroller: a single solution that will take you right up to your child's 3rd birthday.

- A reclined cradle: baby can be close to you yet look around and make his first discoveries of the outside world.

- A high chair: it might seem a bit early, but the months will fly by and soon it will be time for baby food. So why not think ahead and receive it as a gift? And anyway, the most modern, complete models, like the brand new Siesta and the Tatamia, are multifunctional chairs that follow your baby as he grows, and indeed can be used as reclined cradles at birth.

- A cot/bed: if your mom hasn't kept your old cot and your friends can't lend you one, choose a bed that can accommodate both infants (usually in a cot reducer) and older children.

- A changing table: an entire piece of furniture, or a simple mat. You simply cannot do without this.

- A baby bath: this makes cleaning baby easier during the first few months.

- Weighing scales to monitor your child's growth, without becoming obsessed!

- Bedroom humidifier: a healthy environment is essential for rest.

- A night light: reassures baby if he wakes.

- Travel cot: for holidays and outings to see grandparents, uncles and aunts or friends.

- Baby monitor, or similar device: to monitor your child when you are in another room.

- A diaper bin: you can survive without, but it certainly is useful.

- A mosquito net for cots and strollers (if not included with them): essential for the summer months.

- Car sunshades: you cannot do without these if you do not have suitable windows.

- A thermometer to measure baby's temperature: better buy one in advance rather than be caught unprepared.

- A complete cleansing kit: you will use plenty of natural sponges, soothing creams and massage oils, so having "duplicates" won't hurt.

Feeding accessories are another matter, because before you can understand what you really need you must first find out if baby will be breastfed or will take formula. If you can, ask a relative or two to hold off for a few days following your child's birth, so that if necessary they can buy you a nursing pillow or bottle warmer.
